Updating an historic lakefront icon

Lake Shore Country Club, Glencoe

Kettelkamp & Kettelkamp were selected to conceptualize the exterior hardscape and planting components for a capital improvements project for the historic Lake Shore Country Club located in Glencoe, Illinois. The club was designed by Howard van Doren Shaw and built in 1908. The project scope involved the redevelopment of the club’s pool complex, cabana, locker room access and events lawn overlooking the shore of Lake Michigan.

Features of this project included a tentable lawn, outdoor dining, extensive garden plantings and an interactive fountain. Views of Lake Michigan were preserved and enhanced by lowering the elevation of the pool complex and topping the new cabana with a low-profile green roof. Key importance was given to assuring that all areas of the new landscape project were designed to allow for complete accessibility for members and guests with disabilities. Kettelkamp & Kettelkamp continue to work in an ongoing consulting manner for campus-wide improvement projects.

Rooftop spaces bring parks to new heights

Linea Apartments Chicago

The landscape plan for this 33-story residential building in Chicago’s Loop includes a streetscape that was developed with the challenging condition of being under the elevated train tracks. A fifth-floor green roof living space with tree planting, walkways and terraces, as well as sustainable rooftop plants provides outdoor living space for the young professional residents. Rooftop terraces are organized with free-standing planters and at-grade grass and sedum plantings.

Seasonal colors and outdoor terraces

Westmoreland Country Club, Wilmette, Illinois

In 2012 Kettelkamp & Kettelkamp began an ongoing relationship with Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette as the club’s landscape design consultant. Projects for Westmoreland began with the design of all seasonal in-ground and container floral displays. Kettelkamp & Kettelkamp prepared bid documents and assisted Westmoreland’s grounds staff in the implementation of the seasonal displays for three consecutive years.

Kettelkamp & Kettelkamp joined the design team headed by Risinger & Associates to rehabilitate the club’s main outdoor dining terraces as a component of the club’s capital improvements project integrating a new grill dining room expansion, kitchen, lounge and bar renovation within the club’s historic clubhouse. Kettelkamp & Kettelkamp’s most recent collaboration with Westmoreland was the renovation of the cocktail lounge terrace, which the club implemented in-house in 2017.

Outdoor spaces for downtown living

Exhibit on Superior, Chicago

The most visible component of the landscape plan for this mixed-use apartment building is a nearly quarter-acre corner park at the Wells and Superior intersection. Key features of this park include a large open lawn area, outdoor dining, extensive gardens and an area specifically designed for dog walkers. Featured prominently in the open lawn is a sculpture by internationally recognized Swedish sculptor Pål Svensson. The rooftop amenities deck provides residents with a pool and lounging areas, as well as more intimate areas for grilling and socializing within a framework of exuberant plantings. The uppermost roof level consists of a green roof that ameliorates the urban heat-island effect.
